How Can I Send Black Friday Purchases from Canada to India for My Family?
● You can, but Indian customs duty usually applies to new items. Indian customs’ own FAQ says gifts sent by courier or post are allowed only with full duty paid, and it lists no duty-free gift value.
● Carrying purchases in your baggage is often the cheapest route. Travellers have a free allowance, and Pikkol’s Canada to India guide states that one new laptop per adult passenger is duty-free.
● For a large haul, air freight can work better than courier. Pikkol quotes about CA$2,800–4,800 for roughly 200–300 kg of essentials by air, door to door, in 7–14 days.
● Don’t buy 120V appliances for India. Canada runs on 120V/60Hz and India on 230V/50Hz, so many kitchen appliances and hair dryers may not work.

Do I pay customs duty in India on Black Friday purchases?
In most cases, yes. Duty is charged on the CIF value, meaning the cost of the goods plus freight and insurance, and the recipient usually pays it before the parcel is released. As an example from the Chennai Customs FAQ, gifts are charged basic customs duty at 20% plus IGST at 28% on the combined value, a total of about 53.6% of the declared value. Other personal imports with a commercial transaction are assessed at a lower combined rate of about 42%. Rates vary by item and change over time, so check the current position with your courier or the CBIC website before you pay for anything expensive.
Is there a duty-free limit for gifts sent to India?
Sources disagree. Some courier sites say gifts up to ₹5,000 are exempt. Indian customs’ own FAQ says gifts sent by courier or post are permitted only with full duty paid. Follow the official position, and confirm with the courier before you send.
How much can I carry in my baggage instead?
Travellers can bring goods within a free allowance, which is currently ₹75,000 under the Baggage Rules, 2026. Pikkol’s guide also states that one new laptop per adult passenger (18+) is duty-free, and invoices are needed for newer high-value items. If you are moving rather than just travelling, the Transfer of Residence allowance covers used household goods, not new purchases. See the Canada to India moving guide for how it works.
What should I buy, and what should I skip?
Good choices:
● Laptops, tablets and headphones, which usually have dual-voltage chargers (you may need a plug adapter)
● Clothing, shoes and personal items
● Books, toys and small gifts
Think twice, or skip:
● 120V appliances such as kettles, mixers, hair dryers and small kitchen gadgets
● Items with a Canadian-only warranty, which may not be honoured in India
● E-cigarettes, vapes and foreign-made drones, which Pikkol’s guide lists as restricted
● Alcohol and tobacco, which are restricted or heavily limited
● Loose lithium batteries and power banks, which can’t go in freight and are limited in baggage
Large quantities of identical items may be treated as goods for sale, which fall outside personal allowances.
What documents do I need to send a gift to India?
● The invoice or receipt, as proof of value
● An accurate customs declaration with the item description, quantity and value. Under-declaring is customs fraud and can lead to seizure.
● The recipient’s ID for KYC. One valid ID showing identity and address, such as Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID, is generally enough.

How do I send Black Friday gifts to India, step by step?
- Check the item against the restricted list before you buy.
- Keep the invoice and note the exact value paid.
- Choose your route: baggage, courier or air freight.
- Declare the true value and description.
- Tell your family that duty may be due on delivery, and have their ID ready.
- Track and insure anything valuable. The risk guide for international moves and the high-value move guide explain how.
When should I order?
Black Friday is on 27 November, and delivery rushes follow. If you are flying to India for the holidays, buying and carrying is the simplest option. If you are sending by courier or air freight, allow time for transit and customs clearance, and don’t promise a delivery date before the shipment is cleared. Pikkol’s air freight takes 7–14 days door to door.
What if I am sending more than gifts?
If you are sending many boxes, several people’s purchases, or moving back to India, a freight or household move may suit you better than parcels. Compare quotes line by line using our guide to comparing international moving quotes, and see our international relocation services. If you want to send items the other way, from India to family abroad, our international parcel service covers gifts, books, clothing and more.
Pikkol’s take
The most common mistake is buying first and checking customs later. A discounted item can lose its saving once duty, shipping and a warranty gap are counted. Work out your route before you order, keep your invoices, and buy only what you can carry or what is worth freighting. For quick answers on moving and shipping, browse our FAQs.
Frequently asked questions
How can I send Black Friday purchases from Canada to India?
You can carry them in your baggage, send them by courier, or freight them by air. Expect Indian customs duty on new items.
Do I pay duty on gifts sent from Canada to India?
Usually yes. Indian customs’ FAQ says gifts sent by courier or post are allowed only with full duty paid, and it lists no duty-free gift limit.
Is there a ₹5,000 duty-free gift limit?
Some courier sites say so, but Indian customs’ own FAQ doesn’t recognise a duty-free gift value. Check with your courier before sending.
Is it cheaper to carry items in my baggage than to ship them?
Often, for a few items. Travellers have a free allowance, and one new laptop per adult is duty-free. Beyond about 8–10 bags, air or sea freight is usually better value.
Who pays the customs duty in India?
The recipient, before the parcel is released for delivery.
Will Canadian appliances work in India?
Often not. Canada uses 120V/60Hz and India uses 230V/50Hz, so many 120V appliances won’t run properly.
What documents does my family need in India?
The invoice and a valid ID showing identity and address, such as Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID.
