How Do International Students Send Belongings from India to Canada?

●     Students have four main options: carry it in luggage, send a parcel, ship a small LCL shipment by sea, or buy it in Canada.

●     Parcel or air suits essentials needed in the first weeks, and arrives in about 7–14 days by air freight. Sea freight suits larger volumes but takes 70–100 days door to door by LCL.

●     If you ship belongings separately from your flight, list them as goods to follow when you first enter Canada. Goods not on your original list may not qualify for duty-free entry.

●     Most students ship only what is hard to replace and buy bulky items in Canada.

What are the ways to send belongings from India to Canada as a student?

Pikkol’s international parcel service covers personal belongings, kitchen utensils, paintings and idols for students and families abroad. For a larger shipment, see international relocation services.

What should students ship, and what should they buy in Canada?

Worth shipping or carrying:

●     Documents, certificates and study materials

●     Clothing you already own (you will still need a proper winter coat and boots, which are better bought in Canada)

●     A few kitchen basics and familiar spices only if allowed (see below)

●     Personal items and pooja items you want with you

Usually better to buy in Canada:

●     Furniture and mattresses

●     Large appliances, since Canada runs on 120V/60Hz and most Indian 230V appliances are not worth shipping

●     Bulky bedding and winter gear

Many students also rent furnished rooms first, which means there is little to ship. If your belongings stay in India for now, storage can hold them.

How much does it cost to send belongings to Canada as a student?

Sea freight to Canada is priced by volume. Pikkol’s indicative LCL rate is about ₹36,000–50,000 per CBM, and a full 1BHK (about 10.3 CBM) costs roughly ₹3.7–5.2 lakh door to door. Most students ship far less than a 1BHK, so ask whether a minimum charge applies to small shipments. Air freight is priced per kg, and about 250 kg of essentials costs roughly ₹1.5–2.25 lakh.

Prices exclude customs duties, destination inspection fees, storage and insurance. For the full breakdown, see how much it costs to move from India to Canada. To compare quotes properly, use our guide to comparing international moving quotes.

Do students pay customs duty on belongings shipped to Canada?

It depends on how you send them and on your length of stay.

●     Goods in your luggage or shipped as personal effects. Canada allows settlers and certain longer-stay newcomers to import personal and household goods duty- and tax-free if they owned and used them before arriving and declare them properly. Check whether your study permit duration qualifies, since the source rules are written around residents staying 12 months or more. Pikkol’s Canadian partner or the CBSA can confirm your case.

●     Goods to follow. At your first point of entry, you give the border officer a list in two parts: goods you carry and goods to follow. Goods arriving later qualify for duty- and tax-free entry only if they were on your original list. Even if you arrive with no goods, you must still provide the list.

●     Parcels and gifts. Courier shipments from outside the US and Mexico generally have a low-value threshold of CAD $20, above which duty and taxes can apply. Gifts are duty-free only up to a small value.

●     New or unused items. Items bought on the way to Canada or never used can be dutiable.

Pikkol prepares the inventory from your packing list so your forms are ready before you fly. Read the customs, visa and documentation guide for the document checklist.

What can’t students send to Canada?

Leave these out, or check with us first:

●     Meat, dairy and many food items (CFIA rules), and declare all food

●     Seeds, soil, plants and fresh produce

●     Firearms, weapons and some knives

●     Cannabis in any form

●     Prescription medicines beyond personal quantities

●     Hazardous goods such as aerosols, fuel and gas cylinders

When should students book their shipment?

●     6–8 weeks before packing for sea freight or a larger move

●     At least 3–4 weeks before your flight for a parcel

●     Before you fly, prepare your goods-to-follow list so it is ready for the CBSA counter

Sea freight can arrive after your term begins, so send essentials separately and buy basics when you land. After you arrive, the settling-in guide covers your first weeks, and the risk guide for international moves explains insurance for valuables such as laptops.

Frequently asked questions

How do international students send belongings from India to Canada?
Students can carry items in luggage, send a parcel or air shipment for essentials, ship a small LCL sea shipment for bulkier items, or buy things in Canada. Most combine luggage with one parcel or shipment.

Is it cheaper to ship belongings to Canada or buy new?
For a few boxes of clothes and books, shipping can make sense. For furniture, mattresses and appliances, buying in Canada is usually cheaper once freight and handling are counted. Run the numbers using Pikkol’s quote calculator.

How long does it take to send a parcel from India to Canada?
Air freight takes about 7–14 days door to door. Sea freight takes 70–100 days by LCL.

Do I need to declare belongings that arrive after me?
Yes. List them as goods to follow on your CBSA form at your first point of entry, because goods not on your original list may not qualify for duty-free entry.

Can I send food and spices to Canada as a student?
Many food items are restricted under CFIA rules. Declare all food, and check before packing.

Can I send electronics and appliances to Canada?
Small electronics are fine, but Canada uses 120V/60Hz, so most Indian 230V appliances need a transformer and are better replaced locally.
