The face price of an American line is easy to find. Powerball is $2, plus a dollar if you add Power Play. Mega Millions went to $5 in April 2025. Neither figure is what you pay from Gurugram, and the gap catches people out on a first order.

Why the price is higher from abroad

US lottery tickets are sold by licensed retailers inside the United States. No channel ships them overseas, so playing from India means somebody there buys a physical ticket and holds it for you.

That service costs money. An agent travels to a retailer, buys the ticket, scans it, stores it securely until the draw, and handles a claim if one arises. The markup covers all of that, and it is charged on top of the face price rather than hidden inside it.

Reputable operators show the full amount before you confirm. If a site only reveals the total at the payment screen, notice that.

The smaller costs

Two more things affect what leaves your account.

Currency conversion sits between rupees and dollars, and the rate your card or payment provider applies is rarely the mid-market one. Small on a single line. Less small across a year.

How regular players bring the total down

What a realistic monthly figure looks like

The costs that only appear if you win

Worth knowing even though they apply to almost nobody.

American federal tax is withheld from prizes paid to non-resident winners before the money leaves the lottery. State tax may apply depending on where the ticket was bought.
