If you’ve ever worked on a sampling line or a lab-scale process, you know that controlling pressure at tiny flow rates is harder than it looks. A standard regulator sized for typical process flows often hunts, chatters or drifts when only a trickle is passing through. That’s the problem back pressure regulators built for low flow are meant to solve, and it’s where the JB Series from LowFlow Valve comes in.
What a back pressure regulator does
Most people are familiar with pressure reducing regulators, which control pressure downstream of the valve. A back pressure regulator does the opposite. It senses and holds pressure upstream. When the line pressure rises above the set point, the valve opens to relieve the excess. When pressure falls, it closes. The result is a steady, repeatable upstream pressure, which matters wherever a reaction, analyzer or sample conditioning system depends on it.
Where the JB Series fits
According to the manufacturer, the JB Series is designed to handle very high pressures combined with very low flow rates. It’s typically used in research and sampling systems, including those with corrosive and specialty gases. If you’re running a pilot plant, an analytical sample loop or a test rig where flow is measured in small increments, but pressure matters a great deal, this is the kind of environment it was built for.
How it works
The JB is a diaphragm-operated regulator. The principle is simple:
- The diaphragm senses the inlet (upstream) pressure.
- A range spring pushes against the diaphragm from the other side, and the spring setting determines your set pressure.
- When inlet pressure climbs, it pushes the diaphragm against the spring and opens the port.
- When inlet pressure drops, the spring pushes the diaphragm back and closes the port.
One safety detail worth knowing is that a complete diaphragm failure causes the regulator to fail closed. For many sampling and gas applications, a closed failure position is the safer default than an open one, though you should always confirm this fits your process safety review.
Installation tips that save headaches later
The manufacturer’s installation and maintenance instructions are worth a read before you pipe anything up. A few key points:
- Always install an inlet block valve. If the process runs continuously and shutdown isn’t easy, add an outlet block valve and a manual bypass line as well.
- Add overpressure protection. An upstream relief device is recommended if inlet pressure could exceed the rating of the regulator or any downstream equipment.
- Place a pressure gauge about ten pipe diameters upstream, within sight. If your JB has the inlet gauge option on the body, keep in mind that its reading can differ slightly from a gauge mounted elsewhere in the line.
- Match the flow direction to the inlet/outlet markings on the body.
- Use well-drained horizontal pipe where possible. The regulator can be rotated 360° around the pipe axis, but the recommended orientation is with the adjusting knob pointing straight up.
- Don’t bury it, and don’t insulate it. The regulator should stay accessible, and insulated piping systems should leave the regulator itself uninsulated.
Before servicing, always isolate and depressurize the line, and release spring tension before disassembly. Use genuine replacement parts to keep performance consistent.
Choosing the right regulator
When you’re selecting a back pressure regulator for a low-flow application, check these points against your process:
- Maximum inlet pressure and your required set-pressure range
- Flow rate (Cv) relative to your actual flow
- Material compatibility with your media, especially for corrosive gases
- Connection size and end type
- Whether you need options such as an inlet gauge
LowFlow, a brand of Richards Industrials, has focused on valves and regulators for low-flow service since 1995, so the JB Series sits within a broader family that also includes the JBDL and JBPH back pressure designs for different pressure and flow needs.
