India Take on Afghanistan in Second T20I With Varun Injury Blow
India will face Afghanistan in the second T20I at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi as Shreyas Iyer’s side looks to strengthen its position in the three-match series. India won the opening match by seven wickets and currently leads the series 1-0.
The second match comes with an important squad concern, however, as spinner Varun Chakaravarthy has been ruled out of the remainder of the Afghanistan T20I series because of a fresh side strain. His injury has also created uncertainty around his participation in the upcoming Asian Games.
India Look to Seal the Series
India made an impressive start to the series in the opening T20I. After Afghanistan posted 156, India chased down the target with seven wickets in hand and 38 balls remaining.
Abhishek Sharma was the standout performer with the bat, smashing 82 runs from 32 deliveries. Ishan Kishan also contributed with 42, while Arshdeep Singh impressed with the ball, taking three wickets as Afghanistan struggled during the early stages of its innings.
With a 1-0 lead, India now needs another strong performance in New Delhi to secure the series with one game still remaining.
Playkaro News continues to highlight major cricket developments, bringing fans updates on important matches, player performances, team selections and tournament developments.
Varun Chakaravarthy Ruled Out
The biggest concern surrounding India ahead of the second T20I is the absence of Varun Chakaravarthy. The spinner returned to the team for the opening game after recovering from a hamstring injury suffered during the England tour in July.
Varun bowled four overs in the first T20I, conceding only 16 runs and taking one wicket. However, he subsequently reported a fresh side strain and has now been ruled out of the remaining matches against Afghanistan.
He has been instructed to report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for further assessment and rehabilitation.
Asian Games Availability in Doubt
The timing of Varun’s injury is particularly significant because India is preparing for the Asian Games in Japan. The spinner was included in India’s Asian Games squad, but his latest injury has placed his participation under serious doubt.
India is scheduled to depart for the Asian Games shortly after the Afghanistan series. A final decision regarding Varun’s availability is expected to depend on medical assessments and his recovery.
The setback comes after Varun had only recently returned from his previous injury, making the latest development frustrating for both the player and the team management.
India Face Bowling Selection Questions
Varun’s absence also creates a selection challenge for India. His ability to control the middle overs and provide a specialist spin option had been an important part of the team’s plans.
Ravi Bishnoi is among the options available to strengthen the spin department. India also has experienced all-rounders who can contribute with the ball, giving the management several possibilities as it considers the combination for the second match.
The team will need to balance its bowling attack while maintaining the strong batting combination that helped it dominate the opening contest.
Afghanistan Aim for a Strong Response
Afghanistan will enter the second T20I looking to recover from its seven-wicket defeat. The visitors showed some resistance through Azmatullah Omarzai, who scored 64, while Mohammad Nabi added 33.
However, Afghanistan struggled to build momentum during the early part of its innings after losing four wickets for 41 runs. The team will need a much stronger start if it wants to challenge India in the second match.
Focus on Delhi T20I
The second T20I provides India with an opportunity to wrap up the series while Afghanistan will be determined to keep the contest alive.
India’s strong opening performance has given the team confidence, but Varun Chakaravarthy’s injury has added an unexpected complication. With the Asian Games also approaching, the spinner’s recovery will remain an important storyline beyond the Afghanistan series.
For now, India’s immediate objective is clear: produce another disciplined performance in New Delhi and take an unassailable lead in the three-match T20I series.
