International Household Shifting from Hyderabad: Villa-Size Guide

●      Hyderabad is an inland city, so an international household move involves packing at your home, a road leg to an Indian port, ocean freight, destination customs and delivery to your new address.

●      Container size depends on your home’s contents, not its square footage. As a guide: a 2BHK is about 18 CBM (20ft container), a 3BHK about 28 CBM (20ft container), a 4BHK or villa about 40 CBM (40ft container).

●      Indicative door-to-door costs on Pikkol’s USA and Canada routes run from about ₹4.5–7 lakh for a 2BHK or 3BHK to ₹7–10 lakh for a 4BHK or villa. The survey fixes your price.

●      Allow 55–85 days by sea and 7–14 days by air, and book 8–10 weeks before packing starts.

●      Pikkol has a team in Hyderabad, is FAIM, IAM and ISO certified, and has completed more than 1,00,000 moves since 2015.

How does international household shifting work from Hyderabad?

  1. Survey. Your coordinator visits (or does a video survey), walks through every room, and agrees what to ship, sell, store or leave behind.
  2. Written quote. It states the method (LCL, 20ft, 40ft or air), the inclusions, and the destination partner.
  3. Packing at your home. Trained crews pack, label and inventory your goods in your villa or apartment.
  4. Road leg to the port. The container is sealed and moved to an Indian port. Pikkol’s origin ports are Nhava Sheva (JNPT), Mundra and Chennai, and your coordinator confirms which one applies.
  5. Export clearance and shipping. Pikkol handles Indian export paperwork and the booking.
  6. Destination customs and delivery. A partner clears the shipment and delivers it to your door.
  7. Unpacking. Furniture is re-assembled, and you check the inventory with the crew.

Read the customs, visa and documentation guide for the paperwork at each end.

How big is my villa, in shipping terms? (Villa-size guide)

Shipping uses cubic metres (CBM), the volume your goods occupy once packed. Furniture, appliances, crates and the number of boxes decide it, not the plot or carpet area.

What pushes a villa into a bigger container?

●      Solid wood furniture, large dining tables and sectionals

●      Multiple wardrobes, beds and study desks

●      Home gym, piano, pooja unit or large artwork

●      Full kitchen equipment and a stocked pantry

●      Outdoor furniture, garden items or a home office

●      Several cars or bikes shipped separately. See vehicle shifting.

What can bring a villa down a size?

●      Selling bulky furniture that is cheap to replace abroad

●      Leaving behind appliances with voltage or plug issues (India uses 230V/50Hz, and the USA and Canada use 120V/60Hz)

●      Storing seasonal or sentimental items in storage and shipping them later

How much does it cost to ship a villa from Hyderabad?

These are Pikkol’s indicative door-to-door figures for its USA and Canada routes. They exclude destination duties, exam fees, storage and insurance. They are corridor guides, not Hyderabad-specific rates.

For a 5BHK or larger villa, or for the UK, Australia, the UAE or other destinations, the price comes after a survey. See the route guides for USA, Canada, Australia, UAE, Singapore and Germany.

What changes the price?

●      Volume (CBM) and container size

●      Packing level: standard, or crating for valuables

●      Pickup access: floors, lifts, gated-community rules, distance to the port

●      Destination, city and delivery access

●      Storage, insurance and customs duties, which are usually separate

●      Peak season, and how early you book

Our guide to comparing international moving quotes shows how to read a quote line by line.

How long does it take?

Timelines vary with sailing schedules, transhipment, peak seasons and customs selection. Many families ship essentials by air and the rest by sea, so they have what they need on arrival.

What should you ship, sell or store?

How is a Hyderabad villa packed?

Villas bring their own packing needs: more rooms, high-value furniture, larger quantities and sometimes several floors.

●      Room-by-room labelling keeps the inventory accurate for customs and for unpacking.

●      Furniture is dismantled, wrapped and protected for sea transit.

●      Fragile items and art are packed in custom crates when needed.

●      Electronics are packed in original boxes or padded cartons.

●      Documents and valuables stay with you, not in the container.

Check your community’s rules before packing day. Gated communities in areas like Gachibowli, Kondapur, Kokapet or Jubilee Hills may have move-out timings and lift or gate-pass requirements. Get permission in writing.

What if your new home isn’t ready?

Delays between a lease ending in Hyderabad and a home being ready abroad are common. Rather than rush, you can put your goods into managed storage and ship when you’re ready. Pikkol’s storage includes packing, barcode tagging and an inventory. Ask for the access, retrieval and insurance terms in writing.

What about customs?

The shipment is cleared at both ends. Pikkol handles Indian export paperwork, and a partner clears the shipment at the destination. Examples include American Relocation Experts in New York and Maple Relocation Services in Toronto.

●      USA: your partner will guide you on documents such as the CBP Form 3299 and the ISF filing.

●      Canada: Forms BSF186 and BSF186A are the goods-accompanying and goods-to-follow lists, and CFIA rules apply to food.

●      Rules change, and the officer’s decision at clearance is final.

See the customs, visa and documentation guide and the risk guide.

Pikkol’s take

A villa move is easier to price and safer to ship when the survey is thorough and the inventory is detailed. Ask each mover to put the volume estimate, container size, destination partner and damage process in writing, then compare. Learn more about Pikkol, browse the FAQs or contact us.
