Drawcords and Trims: What Garment Makers Should Ask Ropes and Yarn Manufacturers in India
Hoodie cords, bag ties and trims need consistent braided rope. What garment makers should ask ropes and yarn manufacturers in India.
A drawcord looks like the least important part of a hoodie, until it arrives frayed, the wrong thickness or in a shade that does not match the fabric. Garment and accessory makers use braided cord in hoodies, track pants, bags, pouches and footwear. The cost per piece is tiny, and the cost of getting it wrong is not. These are the questions to put to ropes and yarn manufacturers in India before you place an order.
Diameter and tolerance
Most drawcords fall in the 3 to 8 mm range, and the cord must pass through an eyelet or channel without sticking or sliding out. Give your supplier the eyelet size and channel width, and agree a tolerance. A cord that varies by a millimetre along its length behaves differently from one that stays steady.
Material: cotton or polyester
Cotton feels soft and natural, suits casual wear and takes dye well. It can shrink slightly after washing and absorbs moisture.
Polyester has a smooth finish, holds its shape, dries quickly and resists shrinkage. It suits sportswear and garments that are washed often.
The product page lists both cotton and polyester braided rope, so you can compare them in the same size.
The end finish decides the look
Cut ends are where cheap cord shows its weakness. Polyester can be heat-cut and sealed, giving a neat, firm end. Cotton does not melt, so ends usually need tipping with plastic or metal aglets, or binding. Decide this early, because the cut length and the tip size affect each other.
Colour matching
Colour must match across production runs. Ask for a lab dip or a sample swatch, compare under natural light and under shop lighting, and approve before bulk dispatch. Also ask whether the colour will bleed in washing if your garment is light.
Washing and rubbing
Garment cords are tugged, stretched, rubbed against fabric and washed repeatedly. Ask about fuzzing and pilling after rubbing and about how the cord looks after a few washes. Run a basic test yourself: wash a sample cord several times in a sock and look at the result.
Strength where it counts
A drawcord is not a lifting rope, but it should not snap when pulled firmly. Pull-test a few samples by hand, and for large orders agree what you consider acceptable.
Length and packing
Tell your supplier whether you need cut lengths or continuous coils, and how they should be packed. Coils and hanks are easy to cut at the factory, while pre-cut lengths save time on the line. Packing in bags by size avoids mix-ups when several diameters are in use.
