The Sevens and the 6.8s: A Plain-English Map of a Crowded Shelf

The seven-millimeter shelf is crowded because the bore is so useful. A 7mm bullet is slender enough to cut through the air efficiently and heavy enough to hit hard, and the cartridges built around it run from AR-15-sized rounds to very fast magnums. The 6.8s join the shelf because their bullets are nearly the same size.

The 6.8s: similar bullets, different jobs

The 6.8 SPC, introduced by Remington in 2004 after work with U.S. Army special operations, is an AR-15 cartridge, and its loads are at 6.8 spc ammo.

The 6.8 Western, from Winchester and Browning in 2021, is a short magnum that fires heavy .277-inch bullets, and 175-grain loads such as those at 6.8 western 175 grain ammo are typical.

The short and modern sevens

The 7mm-08 Remington is the .308 Winchester case necked to 7mm. It was a wildcat popular with metallic-silhouette shooters before Remington standardized it in 1980, and Nosler's loads for it are at nosler 7mm-08 ammo.

The 7mm Backcountry is a newer hunting cartridge that Federal loads, and 175-grain loads like those at 7mm backcountry 175 grain ammo show the weights it is built around.

The 7mm PRC, Hornady's 2022 long-range hunting cartridge, is also loaded by Weatherby, whose loads are at weatherby 7mm prc ammo.

The magnums

The 7mm Remington Magnum, a belted case introduced in 1962 with the Model 700, is still the standard against which other sevens are judged. Its loads are at 7mm rem mag ammunition.

Remington's Short Action Ultra Mag, the 7mm SAUM, puts magnum power into a short action, and 160-grain loads are at 7mm saum 160 grain ammo. The full-size 7mm Remington Ultra Mag, which Nosler loads, is at nosler 7mm rum ammo.

Weatherby's 7mm Magnum, from the company's first generation of belted magnums, is at 7mm weatherby magnum hollow point ammo.

A European classic

The 7x57R is the rimmed twin of the 7x57 Mauser of 1892, made for break-action rifles, and its loads are at 7x57r ammo for sale.

Cartridge names that look alike are often unrelated. Match the marking on your barrel to the box exactly, and confirm current stock and state shipping restrictions before ordering.
